Minding the Pain
Applying the Principles of Mind-body Medicine in Pain Management

(Includes detailed, fully-footnoted course outline)

Course Purpose: Prevailing standard practices notwithstanding, there are many ways to treat pain besides drugs, surgery, and physical therapy. Progressive relaxation, meditation, hypnosis, imagery, and psychotherapy can all be very effective in alleviating pain and sometimes eliminating it altogether. This seminar provides both the theoretical and practical understanding you need to use mind-body therapies effectively in treating pain.

Course Objectives: You will learn...

  • Emerging standard practices in defining and assessing pain
  • Basic pain physiology
  • The philosophy of pain management: important experiential lessons from the Buddhists and the Stoics
  • The "gate control" theory of pain modulation and control
  • The diathesis-stressor psychological model of chronic pain syndromes
  • The scientific evidence supporting the techniques of mind-body medicine in pain management
  • Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS): a controversial but often useful theory in treating back, neck, and other forms of chronic skeletomuscular pain
  • Mind-body treatment modes and their use with different types of pain
  • The proper roles of the physician, nurse, and the mental health professional in mind-body pain management
  • The multi-disciplinary pain clinic as a model for integrating mind-body medicine with conventional treatment in the era of managed care
  • Discussion of case studies from your practice (as time permits)

Who Should Attend

Nurses who are looking for ways to improve patient outcomes, shorten hospital stays, and reduce the need for analgesics — along with some useful techniques for handling their own on-the-job stress.

Mental Health Professionals who would like to expand their practice and clientele into this rapidly-evolving field, or who would like to further improve their competency in an existing mind-body psychotherapeutic practice.

Practitioners with dual certification with the California boards of Registered Nursing and Behavioral Science earn CE credit for both licenses.
